Another thing I did was to use the CENTER command, so the characters' "gravity" toward the left became a "gravity" toward the center. The "grass" at the bottom was also a way of dealing with that problem. You can see that to the left of the signpost, and it just occurs to me that I could have filled the whole white space with it, and thus made the background uniform. What you can do about that, and I did it a little, is to use an alternation of spaces and periods for white space.

The problem is spaces - the posting software suppresses all but a single space between characters, so you can't effectively have white space.
The short answer is: Go Advanced and keep trying until you've got something that works. Yeah, I've never been able to get ASCII art to work on PE - how'd you do it, John?It's really slow and laborious.
