Unfortunately, as it became a money-maker and as rock declined artistically from the mid-'70s on, much of what was labeled fusion was actually a combination of jazz with easy-listening pop music and lightweight R&B. By the early '70s, fusion had its own separate identity as a creative jazz style (although snubbed by many purists) and such major groups as Return to Forever, Weather Report, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Miles Davis' various bands were playing high-quality fusion that mixed some of the best qualities of jazz and rock. But as rock became more creative and its musicianship improved, and as some in the jazz world became bored with hard bop and did not want to play strictly avant-garde music, the two different idioms began to trade ideas and occasionally combine forces. Up until around 1967, the worlds of jazz and rock were nearly completely separate. Fusion's original definition was best: a mixture of jazz improvisation with the power and rhythms of rock. Max: So, that might be the starting point for a track. Our sounds range from: Pop, Acoustic, Folk, Blues, Soul, Electro-Swing, R&B, Hip Hop, Classical & other Lyrical. At Fusion Dance NYC we also play electronica, but we are always striving to add new influences into our sets.

I could maybe take that and see what that sounds like if I bring in some more sort of jazzy keys over the top. Electronic music also inspires creativity due to the eclectic moods and rhythms available. So I might start out by laying down a little kind of jungle-y beat. I’m kind of quite into plays jazz keys and bringing in different types of harmony, through to like the Grime Opera which is a project I did where I was working with a grime artist and also with an orchestra.īen: Would you be able to show us something you’ve been working on? Max: I mean, I like to combine all kinds of different sounds in the studio. Artists in Africa combine sort of traditional west African rhythms with funk from the US.īen: Could you tell us a little bit more about the kinds of music you mix together?
